About

Filip Henin was born in Mayen, (DE), in 1986. He lives and works in Berlin, (DE).

The scenes in Filip Henin’s paintings take place in a kind of timeless, placeless Beckett world as if on an empty stage stripped down to just the essentials. It’s hard to tell if it’s a coastal landscape or a sea, or a karstified hillside up in the mountains, the sea is a blue strip of sky. Henin draws out not only people but also landscapes, taking out the specific features, leaving basic shapes that are reminiscent of the Eifel, or could be in Tuscany. Antiquity, romantic landscape painting, postmodernism, Italian transavanguardia, and the mysticism of Francesco Clemente and Sandro Chia can be found, as well as the figurative painting of the 1990s. Henin’s painting combines, without drama or pathos, two completely contrary forces: the reflection of painting and painting history and the need to simply be.

Education
