Nous N’irons plus au bois…
curated by Marie-Puck Broodthaers
01.03.2025 – 17.04.2025
Robert Grunenberg is pleased to present Nous n’irons plus au bois…, an exhibition organized by Marie-Puck Broodthaers, daughter of the Belgian poet and artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976). The exhibition, which she curated with Robert Grunenberg, is a portrait of a collection that is constantly being expanded, developed and restructured. Nous n’irons plus au bois… covers an artistic spectrum from modernism to so-called post-internet art. One section is dedicated to the Surrealist movement, with paintings, watercolours, drawings, objects, collages and photographs by artists such as Fernand Léger, Meret Oppenheim, Francis Picabia and René Magritte, and is extended to include contemporary works by artists such as Audrey Guttman and the Brazilian indigenous artist Maria Lira Marques.
Highlights include paintings by artists such as the Swiss-Argentinian painter Vivian Suter or the poetic landscapes of the painter, writer and composer Frank Walter (1926-2009), exhibited at the 2017 Venice Biennale and is now one of the most famous painters in the Caribbean.
Another focus is on artists whose work is characterized by a critical engagement with the Anthropocene and new technologies: Katja Novitskova, Pamela Rosenkranz, Slavs & Tatars, Tavares Strachan, Edith Dekyndt, juxtaposition with artist based in Berlin such as Berta Fischer and Maki Na Kamura, as well as Belgian artists Pascal Bernier and Angel Vergara (film and performance) and artists from the gallery roster of Robert Grunenberg: Kensise Anders, Filip Henin, Stefan Knauf, Jan Zöller.
Almost all the works in the exhibition share a formal and thematic preoccupation with nature and civilization, materialism, dreams and utopia. This is also suggested by the title of the exhibition, Nous n’irons plus au bois… (We are no longer going into the woods). It comes from a 1972 work by Marcel Broodthaers, which is also on view. The exhibition traces the ambivalent interplay between aesthetic staging and critical thinking, modernist awakening and dystopia, bringing together museum modern and contemporary positions.
